Klaus Iohannis is the current President of Romania, serving his first term in office. Iohannis was elected Mayor of the city of Sibiu in 2000, serving for four terms. In 2007, Sibiu was designated European Capital of Culture, alongside Luxembourg, thereby becoming the first city of a non-EU country to win this title before the country’s official EU accession. On November 16, 2014 he was elected President of Romania. He was sworn in before the Parliament on December 21. Throughout his term in office, President Klaus Iohannis received numerous state honorary distinctions and prestigious international awards for his contribution to the promotion of democratic values, the fight against corruption, transparency and the rule of law, including the Franz Josef Strauss award (Hanns Seidel Foundation, 2018), the Light Unto the Nations award (American Jewish Committee, 2017) and the Martin Buber-Plaque (EURIADE Foundation, 2016).
