The Scientific Committee is formed of influential experts and academics from within the EUI community. Drawing on their expertise and the expertise of the EUI, the Committee designs the content of the conference and invites the speakers focusing on topical issues and ensuring the discussions are both engaging and accessible to all.
Stefano Cappiello, Director General, Directorate “Legal Affairs – Banking and Financial System”, Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance
Stefano Cappiello is qualified as associate professor of business law and the Director General, Directorate “Legal Affairs – Banking and Financial System” at the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance since January 2019. Previous positions include: Deputy Director of the Florence School of Banking and Finance at the EUI, Head of Unit at the Single Resolution Board (2015-2018) and at the European Banking Authority (2011-2014), Senior adviser at the Italian Finance Ministry (2008-2011), and senior officer at the Bank of Italy (1999-2008). He holds an LLM from the University of Chicago and a PhD from the University of Viterbo. He published widely on corporate, banking and financial law.
Madeleine de Cock Buning, Professor in the School for Transnational Governance
Madeleine de Cock Buning is part-time Professor at the EUI’s School of Transnational Governance (STG). She leads on Digital Politics, Economy and Societies. In 2018 she chaired the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on fake news and disinformation, assigned to provide options on how to react to the dissemination of fake news both online and offline. She is President of the Board of Commissioners Dutch Media Authority, and was until 2017 the Chair of the European Regulators Group for Audio Visual Media Services. She is Honorary judge to the Court of Appeal in The Hague and Professor at the Utrecht University with a chair in Copyright Law and Media and Communication Law.
Renaud Dehousse, President (Chair)
Renaud Dehousse is President of the EUI. Previously, he was Jean Monnet Professor of European Law and Political Science at Sciences Po, where he founded and directed the Centre for European Studies. He also chaired Sciences Po’s Governing Council 2013-2016. Before moving to Sciences Po, Professor Dehousse held professorships at the EUI and at the University of Pisa. He a scientific advisor to Notre Europe, the centre for research founded by Jacques Delors. Prof. Dehousse has been a member of several working parties on the reform of European institutions established by the European Commission and the French Government.
Vincenzo Grassi, Secretary General
Vincenzo Grassi is the Secretary-General of the EUI. A career diplomat, he served most recently as Italy’s Ambassador to Belgium. Previously, he was Italy’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the European Union, Principal Director for European Integration at the DG for the EU within Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Head of the Department for European Policies within the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. He then returned to the Italian Foreign Ministry’s DG for Cultural and Economic Promotion and Innovation. Grassi has been a visiting fellow at Harvard University and is the author of various publications on European politics.
Gábor Halmai, Professor of Comparative Constitutional Law
Gábor Halmai is Professor of Comparative Constitutional Law and Director of Graduate Studies at EUI’s Law Department. His primary research interests are comparative constitutional law and international human rights. He has published several books and articles, as well as edited volumes on these topics in English, German and Hungarian. He previously held positions at the Eötvös Loránd University, Princeton University and the European Masters Program in Human Rights and Democratization. He has also been chief advisor to the President of the Hungarian Constitutional Court and member of the EU Fundamental Rights Agency’s Management Board.
Juho Härkönen, Professor of Sociology
Juho Härkönen is Professor of Sociology at the EUI. He is co-director of the Comparative Life Course and Inequality Research Centre and of Florence Population Studies. His research interests cover life course research, the causes and consequences of family dynamics and structure, social stratification and comparative research, with recent publications covering stratification in prenatal smoking, antecedents and outcomes of divorce, and occupational careers. He was a postdoctoral researcher at Yale before moving to Stockholm in 2009 where he was promoted to Professor in 2016. He has been visiting professor at the University of Turku (2010-18).
Andrea Ichino, Professor of Econometrics
Andrea Ichino is Professor of Econometrics at the EUI. He was previously Professor of Economics at the University of Bologna. Before that he taught at Bocconi University (1992-96) and was first a Jean Monnet Fellow (1997) and then full-time professor (1997-2006) at the EUI. Prof. Ichino has published widely in journals such as the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the American Economic Review, and the Journal of the European Economic Association. He is a Research Fellow of the European Association of Labor Economists, of CEPR, CESifo, IZA. He has been Editor in Chief of “Labour Economics” and is currently a Managing Editor of “Economic Policy”.
Marco Incerti, Director of the Communications Service
Marco Incerti is the Director of the Communications Service at the EUI. Before joining the Institute, he worked for fifteen years as Head of Communication and Research Fellow at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels. Previously, he had worked in the International Law Department of the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’. As a researcher, he concentrated on the European Constitutional process, following the work of the Convention on the future of Europe. Incerti is a member of the European Association of Communication Directors and enjoys Observer status at the Club of Venice, the network of the communication officials of the EU28 chancelleries and foreign ministries.
Brigid Laffan is Director of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies
Brigid Laffan is Director of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and the Global Governance Programme at the European University Institute. Previously, she was Professor of European Politics and Vice-President in the School of Politics and International Relations at the University College Dublin. She was the founding director of the Dublin European Institute and is a member of the Royal Irish Academy. Laffan has been awarded several prizes for her research in the field of EU Governance over the years, including the THESEUS Award for outstanding research on European Integration (2012) and the UACES Lifetime Achievement Award (2014).
Joanna Wawrzyniak is part-time Professor of History of 20th-century Central and Eastern Europe
Joanna Wawrzyniak is part-time Professor of History of 20th-century Central and Eastern Europe at the Department of History and Civilization, EUI. She received her PhD from the University of Warsaw, Poland. She was a visiting fellow at the New School for Social Research, Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies, Imre Kertész Kolleg in Jena and Herder-Institut in Marburg. Her research focuses on social and intellectual history and various uses of the past in Central and Eastern Europe. Currently, she leads a work package on City Museums and Multiple Colonial Pasts of the Horizon2020 ECHOES (European Colonial Heritage Modalities in Entangled Cities) Project.
