#SOU2021: Europe in a Changing World

The State of the Union conference, organised by the European University Institute, is an annual event for high-level reflection on the European Union, renowned for fostering global connections and conversations, disseminating expert knowledge and providing excellent networking opportunities in the beautiful setting of Florence.

The 2021 edition of The State of the Union will revolve around the theme “Europe in a Changing World” to address the challenges and opportunities for Europe amidst rising concerns over global commons and the climate emergency, a shifting economic and geopolitical power balance, major challenges to multilateralism and the ongoing global battle against COVID-19. Over the course of two days, in high-level panels, conversations, interviews and addresses, world leaders and experts will tackle multilateral governance and Europe’s role on the global stage, focussing on key issues such as AI, climate, economic and financial integration in a COVID-19 era, data, geopolitics, peace and human rights and strategic autonomy.

For this special edition, which marks the tenth anniversary of The State of the Union, the EUI aims to integrate the strengths of the usual in-person format, with the entirely online format of the 2020 edition, to make The State of the Union a hybrid event in 2021. #SOU2021 will be underpinned by an array of digital strategies and interactive features to ensure that content is both accessible and appealing to a wide and diverse online global audience that is balanced along gender, geographical, generational and sectoral lines.
