Member of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan, Member of the United Nations Standby Team of Senior Mediation Advisors and Adviser to the African Union High Level Implementation Panel on South Sudan
Barney Afako is member of the United Nations (UN) Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan and the UN Mediation Standby Team of Senior Mediation Advisors. He is a lawyer with vast experience in conflict mediation, human rights, refugee law, criminal justice and transitional justice. Since 2010 he has served as Adviser to the African Union High Level Implementation Panel on South Sudan and is a part-time Tribunal Judge in the UK. He has advised the African Union Panel on Darfur (2009), served as the Chief Legal Advisor to the South Sudanese mediation in the Juba Peace Talks between the Government of Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army (2006-2008) and provided advice to numerous other peace processes on addressing the past.
