Vera Songwe

Under-Secretary-General, United Nations and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa

Vera Songwe is the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). Upon her appointment, she became the first woman to lead the institution in its 60-year history. Prior to ECA, she held a number of senior leadership roles with the International Finance Corporation and World Bank. She is also a Member of the African Union Institutional Reforms team under the direction of the President of Rwanda. She was a Visiting Researcher at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minnesota and at the University of Southern California. She holds a PhD in Mathematical Economics from the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics.
