Assistant Secretary-General for Strategic Coordination, Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary-General

Volker Türk is Assistant Secretary-General for Strategic Coordination in the Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary-General. Mr Türk ensures coherence in strategic analysis and system-wide coordination. Previously, he served as Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. From April 2008 to September 2009 he was Director for Organizational Development and Management. Before that he had several UNHCR assignments in various parts of the world. From 2000 to 2004 he was Chief of the Protection Policy and Legal Advice Section. Before UNHCR, he worked at the Institute of International Law at the University of Vienna, where he finished his doctoral thesis on UNHCR and its mandate. He has published widely on international refugee and human rights law.
