Giacomo Calzolari, Professor of Economics, EUI

Giacomo Calzolari is Professor of Economics at the EUI and Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research. He has published in renowned international journals including the American Economic Review, Rand Journal of Economics and the Journal of Economic Theory. He is editor of journals including the International Journal of Industrial Organization and European Economy – Banks, Regulation, and the Real Sector. He is a member of the steering committee of the European Association of Industrial Economics, the Association of Competition Economics and the Economic Advisory Group on Competition Policy of the European Commission. His current research interests include antitrust and competition policy, artificial intelligence, economics of regulation, industrial organization, banking regulation and supervision and the economics of incentives.

Madeleine de Cock Buning, Professor, School of Transnational Governance, EUI

Madeleine de Cock Buning is a leading expert on Digital Politics, Economy and Societies. She is part-time Professor at the EUI’s School of Transnational Governance, Vice President Public Policy Europe, Middle East and Africa at Netflix and Professor at Utrecht University with a Chair in Copyright Law and Media and Communication Law. de Cock Buning has served as Honorary Judge to the Court of Appeal in The Hague (2010-2020), Chair of the Regulatory Authority to the Media in The Netherlands (2009-2019) and Chair to the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on Fake News and Disinformation in 2018. She has also served as Chair of the European Regulators Group for Audio Visual Media Services.

Renaud Dehousse, President, EUI

Renaud Dehousse is President of the EUI. Previously, he was Jean Monnet Professor of European Law and Political Science at Sciences Po, where he founded and directed the Centre for European Studies. He also chaired Sciences Po’s Governing Council (2013-2016). Before moving to Sciences Po, Professor Dehousse held professorships at the EUI and at the University of Pisa. He was a scientific advisor to Notre Europe, the think-tank founded by Jacques Delors. Professor Dehousse has been a member of several working parties on the reform of European institutions established by various national and European institutions.

Jos Delbeke, European Investment Bank Climate Chair and Professor, School of Transnational Governance, EUI

Jos Delbeke is part-time Professor at the EUI’s School of Transnational Governance and at KU Leuven. He holds the first EIB Chair on Climate Policy and International Carbon Markets and was previously Director-General of the European Commission’s DG for Climate Action (2010-2018). Delbeke was very involved in setting the EU’s climate and energy targets for 2020 and 2030, and in developing EU legislation on the Emissions Trading System (ETS), cars and fuels, air quality, emissions from big industrial installations and chemicals (REACH). He developed Europe’s International Climate Change strategy and was the European Commission’s chief negotiator at the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties, playing a key role in the EU’s implementation of the Kyoto Protocol and in negotiations on the Paris Agreement.

Marco Del Panta, Secretary General, EUI

Marco Del Panta is Secretary General of the EUI . He was previously City Councilman and Special Advisor to the Mayor of Florence. A career diplomat, he served most recently as Italy’s Ambassador to Switzerland. Previously, he was Director for Migration Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has also served at the General Directorate for the European Union of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in Brussels at the Italian Permanent Representation to the EU. Previously, he held diplomatic positions in Austria and Egypt. Del Panta taught a course on “European Governance and decision making” at the University of Florence (2009-2011) and is member of the Council of the Fondation Jean Monnet pour l’Europe in Lausanne.

Philipp Genschel, Joint Chair in European Public Policy, Department of Social and Political Sciences and Robert Schuman Centre, EUI

Philipp Genschel holds a joint chair in European Public Policy at the Department of Social and Political Science and at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, EUI. He was previously deputy director of the Collaborative Research Center on ‘Transformation of the State’ in Bremen and a research fellow of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne. He has recently published ‘Beyond the regulatory polity?’ and ‘The European integration of core state powers and International Organizations as Orchestrators’. His current research focuses on the international political economy of taxation, the European integration of core state powers and the logic of indirect governance in domestic and international politics.

Bernard Hoekman, Robert Schuman Chair and Dean of External Relations, EUI

Bernard Hoekman is Robert Schuman Chair, Dean, External Relations, and Professor and Director of Global Economics at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, where he coordinates a Horizon 2020 project on EU external policy and undertakes research on international trade and regulation. Prior positions include Director of the International Trade Department and Research Manager in the Development Research Group of the World Bank. A graduate of the Erasmus University Rotterdam, he obtained his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Michigan. He is a CEPR Research Fellow, a Senior Associate of the Economic Research Forum for the Arab countries, Turkey and Iran, and has served on several World Economic Forum Global Action Councils.

Marco Incerti, Director, Communications Service, EUI

Marco Incerti is the Director of the Communications Service at the EUI. Before joining the Institute, he worked for fifteen years as Head of Communication and Research Fellow at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels. Previously, he had worked in the International Law Department of the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’. As a researcher, he concentrated on the European Constitutional process, following the work of the Convention on the future of Europe. Incerti is a member of the European Association of Communication Directors and enjoys Observer status at the Club of Venice, the network of the communication officials of the EU28 chancelleries and foreign ministries.

Sarah Nouwen, Chair and Professor of Public International Law, EUI

Sarah Nouwen is Chair and Professor of Public International Law at the EUI. She is on leave from the University of Cambridge, where she is a Reader in International Law and a Fellow of Pembroke College and was Co-Deputy Director of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law. Nouwen is also an Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of International Law. She previously worked in international diplomacy advising on transitional justice, peace negotiations and the rule of law at the Dutch mission to the United Nations, the Netherlands Embassy in Khartoum and as a Senior Legal Advisor to the African Union High Level Implementation Panel in Sudan. She has also served as a consultant for the UK Department of International Development in Darfur.

George Papaconstantinou, Professor of International Political Economy and Director of Executive Education, School of Transnational Governance, EUI

George Papaconstantinou has served in the Greek government as Minister of Finance, Minister of Energy and Environment, as well as member of parliament and as an MEP. Earlier in his career he was a senior economist at the OECD, served in a policy advisory capacity for the Greek government, taught at the Athens University of Economics and Business and worked as a consultant for the European Commission and international think-tanks. Since leaving public office, his work has focused on economic and financial policy-related analysis and governance issues. At the STG, he is Director of Executive Education and also leads the Transformation of Global Governance in collaboration with the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, a project aiming to decipher the transformation of global governance.

Alexander Stubb, Director, School of Transnational Governance, EUI

Alexander Stubb is the Director of the School of Transnational Governance, EUI. He is the Former Prime Minister, Finance Minister, Foreign Minister and Europe and Trade Minister of Finland (2008-16) and Vice President at the European Investment Bank (2017-2020). From 2004 to 2008 he was a Member of the European Parliament following various posts in Brussels. Between 2001 and 2003 he was advisor to the President of the European Commission and served twice in the Permanent Representation of Finland to the European Union. He is a self-professed sportsnut.
