Sociologist, former dissident, former Minister of Education, former President of the Hungarian Liberal Party (SZDSZ)
Bálint Magyar is a Sociologist and Senior Core Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study at the Central European University where he is working on the project “Post-Communist Regime Typology”. Between 1979 and 1990 he was a human rights activist of the anti-communist dissident movement and one of the leaders of the Hungarian Liberal Party (SZDSZ). Between 1988 and 1990 he took part in the negotiations for peaceful transition. Between 1990 and 2010 he was an MP, twice served as a Minister of Education (1996-1998; 2002-2006). He was a member of the Governing Board of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (2008-2012) as well.
