General information on transport

Flying to Florence

Florence Peretola airport is located 8 km from the centre, approx. 30 minutes by taxi or bus. Taxis can normally be found outside the arrival terminal. The airport is also connected to the main railway station by a shuttle bus that leaves every 30 minutes (on the hour and half-hour) and takes 20 minutes. Tickets are available on board for € 6.00.

The main railway station can be also reached via the T2 Tram, which runs from the airport to the Unità stop close to the central station. The tram runs every five to ten minutes and a ticket costs € 1.50 per person. The journey takes 20 minutes.

Tickets are available Authorized sellers (single ticket, passes and 10-ticket strip), Autolinee Toscane website www.at-bus.it (passes, registration required), APP TABNET (single ticket, passes) and automated ticket machines at stops (single ticket).

Pisa International Airport, also named Galileo Galilei Airport, is located 85 km from Florence, approx. 1 hour by bus or train. Buses can be found outside the arrival terminal and connect directly the airport to the city of Florence. This service is provided by several companies. Prices and the schedule can be checked on the website of the airport. Florence city centre can also be reached by train. Prices and timetable are available at pisa-mover.com.

Guglielmo Marconi Bologna International Airport is situated 105 km from the centre, approx. 1 hour and 30 minutes, it can be reached by train or bus. The airport is connected to Bologna Central Station by Marconi Express tram that leaves every 7 minutes. Tickets can be purchased on this website.

Arriving by train to Florence Santa Maria Novella

You can reach Florence by train using either Trenitalia or Italo. Florence’s central station is Santa Maria Novella from which buses to the EUI, as described below, can be taken from the bus stop “Piazza Adua” which is next to the station.

  • From Florence Airport Peretola to downtown Florence about 25/30 minutes (approx. 25-30 €)
  • From Florence Airport to the European University Institute about 30 minutes (approx 30 €)
  • From Florence central railway station Santa Maria Novella to the European University Institute: about 20-30  minutes (approx. 30-35 €)

Arriving by car

From the A1 Milano-Napoli (Autostrada del Sole), take the Firenze Sud exit and follow directions to the centre of town/Stadio. To reach the EUI, follow Stadio then Fiesole. San Domenico is on the main road to Fiesole. To reach the EUI’s car park (limited access by approval only), you will need to travel north on Via Faentina before turning right on Via della Badia dei Roccettini. The entrance to the EUI is immediately on the right hand side.

Arriving by Bus

From Florence city centre

From Santa Maria Novella, take bus no. 7 in the direction ‘Fiesole’ and get off at ‘San Domenico 01. For routes and timetables see the public bus service site at Autolinee Toscane.

From Florence Airport

By airport shuttle (Volainbus) to the Autostazione SITA opposite Florence central railway station, Santa Maria Novella (SMN).

By tram (Line T2) to the central railway station, Santa Maria Novella (SMN). For shuttle bus and local bus timetables please consult the Autolinee Toscane’s website.

Arriving by Bus

From Florence city centre

From Santa Maria Novella Station head towards Via Panzani, take bus no. C2 in the direction “Piazza Beccaria” and get off at “Canto Alla Quarconia”

From Florence Airport

Take tram (Line T2) to the central railway station, Santa Maria Novella (SMN). Then you can take bus no. C2 in the direction “Piazza Beccaria” and get off at “Canto Alla Quarconia”.

Or walk from Santa Maria Novella Station head towards Florence Cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral) take Panzani street, and continue along Cerretani street, arriving at Florence Cathedral Turn right into Calzaiuoli street and reach Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio).

DAY 3 on 6 May,  Villa Salviati – European University Institute

Arriving by Bus

From Florence city centre

Take bus no. 1A direction “Faentina Salviati” and get off at “Faentina Salviati”.

From Florence Airport

Take tram (Line T2) direction “Unità, Santa Maria Novella”, get off at “Fratelli Rosselli”. Then walk for five minutes towards Piazzale Montelungo, where you can take bus no. 302A, direction “Galliano” and get off at “Il Cionfo_V”.
